knowing your sailing dinghyHaving improved your sailing abilities, in the 'Building your Sailing Knowledge' course, you need to get to know your sailing dinghy better. This youth sailing course concentrates on the boat controls and their effect. We offer the 'Knowing your Sailing Dinghy' course for eight to sixteen year olds.

Knowing your Sailing Dinghy

 Duration:  2 days - 1 evenings
 Experience:  Building Sailing Knowledge
 Minimum age:  8 years old
 Held when:  Weekends and school holidays
 Coach ratio:  No more than 6 students per coach
 Safety boats:  No more than 9 dingies per safety boat
 Dingies used:  Race X's, Sonnets, Mirrors, Stadt 15

On completion of the 'Knowing your Sailing Dinghy' course the student will be able to rig, launch and sail your dinghy in any direction and return from the place you started from:

Practical sailing abilities

  • Launch and recover a dinghy in an onshore breeze
  • Reef a dinghy ashore, as per the conditions
  • Understand the 5 core elements of sailing
  • sail setting
  • balance
  • boat trim
  • centerboard
  • course sailed
  • Sail 'close hauled' on a 'close beam' & 'broad reach' & on a 'run'
  • Tack towards the wind (upwind sailing)
  • Gybe from a 'broad reach' to a 'broad reach'
  • Can 'right' a capsized dinghy without assistance
  • Come alongside a moored boat, jetty or floating dock
  • Prepare for & takeup a tow from a powerboat
  • Stop the boat at any given point
  • Tie appropriate knots

  • Understand the points of sailing:

  • Understand how a sailboat works
  • Understand how to recover a person overboard
  • Understand the dangers you might come across

Knowing your Sailing Dinghy course notes

  • Students under 9 must be accompanied by a parent or adult sibling
  • Campers are under adult supervision at all times
  • All sailing & safety equipment will be supplied
  • All food & beverages will be supplied
  • Tuckshop will be available after meals
